CALY+, GRMN+, LUCK-, EA-, Monitoring Declines in Experiences and Entertainment Spending, Prediction Markets vs. Traditional Sports Betting, Weekly NKE Update. The Optimal Sports Section
- The Optimal Sports Ecosystem Index revenue tracker’s 8-week trend declined -2% y/y (the 12-week trend is flat – we note -220 bps inflection). By sector, Sports Fandom’s 8-week spending trend is weakest (-15% y/y primarily due to -15% T8W y/y at Ticketmaster) and Sports Participation spending is down -3% (transactions down -9%), while Sports Betting spending is up +3%.
- NKE beat Q3 estimates; the share price is down over -15% on guidance, primarily sales in China, impacts of oil prices, geopolitical disruption, & tariffs (as we have noted, “canary in the coalmine, very early indicators are showing traction), weekly analysis below.
- CALY (+): Spending continues to increase +33% y/y on a T8W basis while digital traffic continues to increase +11% y/y (we do note slight negative inflections between shorter-term and longer-term trends for both).
- GRMN (+): A few weeks ago we noted struggling trends for GRMN, but spending is now up +39% y/y on a T8W basis (and inflecting +21% relative to longer-term trends) as sales this week measured its third highest nominal value since September 2019 and highest since December 2024.
- LUCK (-): Spending is down -36% y/y and digital traffic is down -6%, in conjunction with -21% decel in spending and -2% decel in foot traffic.
- EA (-): Spending is down -5% T8W y/y and decel is -12% compared to longer-term trends, while digital traffic is down -10% T8W y/y (decel is -7%).
- Equity performance for both the Equal-Weight (+3.3% w/w) and Cap-Weighted (+2.0% w/w) Optimal Sports Ecosystem Indices improved relative to last week, as did the Optimal Sports Fandom Index (+4.5% w/w), Optimal Sports Betting & Data Index (+1.6% w/w), and Optimal Sports Participation Index (+3.3% w/w). The Optimal Sports Fandom Index outperformed most benchmarks, while the Optimal Sports Participation Index performed similarly to most benchmarks and the Optimal Sports Betting & Data Index underperformed most benchmarks.

- Bayern Munich vs. Real Madrid (April 15th @ 3:00 PM EST), Champions League Quarterfinals Second Leg: Since the 1999-2000 UCL season, Bayern Munich have won the Champions League 3 while Real Madrid have won a staggering 8 times. An incredibly strong Bayern Munich side returns home to Allianz Arena with a lead following a 2-1 win at the Bernabéu in the first leg, but Real Madrid often seem to find a way no matter the odds in this particular competition.
Stat of the Week: Cooper Flagg Becomes First Teenager to Score 50+ Points in an NBA Game
On April 3rd, in a game vs. the Orlando Magic, rookie and first overall pick Cooper Flagg of the Dallas Mavericks made history by not only becoming the youngest player in NBA history to score 50+ points in a game (scoring 51), but also becoming the first teenager to do so. Of the top 10 youngest players to score 50+ points in a game, Lebron James is on the list three times, while Rick Barry is the only other player on the list to have done so prior to 2009 (all the way back in 1965). Notably, Devin Booker, who is now the fourth youngest player on the list, scored 70 pointsduring his 50+ point game in 2017 at only 20 years and 145 days old.

NKE Trends Weekly Analysis
NKE’s share price declined over 15% post-close following earnings last week, due to weaker guidance including in China and geopolitical factors, although the company mostly beat on earnings. Attention Economy trends continue to increase y/y globally, and are slightly negative but accelerating in the US.

Our Gen Z Attention Economy Monitor, which monitors how Gen Z consumers interact digitally with individual brands, improved for NKE in January (+2% y/y) and February (+5% y/y) but declined slightly in March (-3% y/y). Meanwhile, Optimal’s News & Social Sentiment Monitor had also turned positive for NKE in recent months for the first time since early-mid 2023, but has turned very negative following NKE’s recent earnings call.
