Our Analysis Suggests Sports Fandom Spending Least Negative in Months; Elite Athlete Brand Views; MTN & GRMN Inflections; NKE Digital Traction Improves; Luxury Summit: The Optimal Sports Section

Sports Ecosystem spending growth decelerated for a fourth consecutive week though the level remains solidly positive, our subsector equity indices sharply underperformed a roughly flat market, and our latest NKE analysis finds digital traffic at series highs even as other channels weaken: (1) Sports Ecosystem revenue tracker remains strongly positive but decelerated to +6.9% T8W y/y, a fourth consecutive week of deceleration, led again by Sports Betting & Data at +22.8% T8W y/y, while Sports Fandom accelerated to -3.6% T8W y/y, its strongest reading since mid-June; (2) We released our 16-page Optimal Elite Athlete Brand Survey last week built off deep primary research; (3) Sports equity indices sharply underperformed, with the Equal-Weight (-3.7% w/w) and Cap-Weighted (-3.4% w/w) indices both falling heavily against a -0.3% w/w decline in the S&P 500 and every subindex declining; (4) MTN spending inflected positively to +7.9% T8W y/y vs. -0.1% T16W y/y with digital traffic also turning positive, while GRMN spending turned negative at -6.9% T8W y/y from +7.2% T16W y/y with digital traffic decelerating and sentiment weak on both measures; (5) NKE US digital traffic accelerated further to +28% T16W y/y, a fourth consecutive series high, though our Online Monitor and In-Store Monitors decelerated, and the company hired former Walmart exec and recent senior advisor and executive team member of Walmart China Jane Ewing as EVP and CCO; and (6) we have sports ecosystem companies at Optimal’s 10/29 Luxury Leaders Summit in NYC, please connect with your salesperson about attendance.

  • The Optimal Sports Ecosystem Index revenue tracker decelerated to +6.9% T8W y/y, down from +7.7% last week and a fourth consecutive week of deceleration, though the level remains solidly positive. Sports Betting & Data spending decelerated to +22.8% T8W y/y from +25.6% last week, on +17.7% transactions and a +4.4% ticket increase, and remains by a wide margin the leading sub-index. Sports Fandom spending improved sharply to -3.6% T8W y/y (from -7.7% last week) on -2.1% transactions and a -1.6% ticket decline, its strongest reading since mid-June. Sports Participation spending held at -6.1% T8W y/y on an -8.7% drop in transactions, partially offset by a +2.8% ticket increase.
  • Sports equity indices sharply underperformed a roughly flat market this week. The Equal-Weight Optimal Sports Ecosystem Index (-3.7% w/w) and the Cap-Weighted Optimal Sports Ecosystem Index (-3.4% w/w) both fell heavily against a -0.3% w/w decline in the S&P 500. Every subindex declined as well, with Optimal’s Sports Fandom Index (-7.1% w/w) declining most sharpl, followed by the Sports Betting & Data Index (-4.3% w/w) and the Sports Participation Index (-2.6% w/w).
  • MTN: Spending inflected positively to +7.9% T8W y/y vs. -0.1% T16W y/y (+8.1% inflection), with digital traffic also turning positive at +1.1% T8W y/y and inflecting positively (+1.1%). Monthly sentiment is modestly negative, with Twitter sentiment down -4.4% m/m and news sentiment down -2.2% m/m.
  • GRMN: Spending turned negative at -6.9% T8W y/y from +7.2% T16W, a -14.1% inflection. Digital traffic remains positive at +7.9% T8W y/y but is decelerating (-3.5% inflection). Monthly sentiment is weak on both measures, with Twitter sentiment down -6.0% m/m and news sentiment down -7.2% m/m.
  • Weekly NKE Analysis: US digital traffic accelerated further (+27.6% T16W y/y in the most recent week, up from +26.8% last week), a fourth consecutive series high, and global digital traffic continues to accelerate (+13.3% T16W y/y vs. +13.0% last week). Optimal’s Online Monitor decelerated for a third straight week to +16.3%, and the In-Store Monitor deteriorated further to -3.2% in its most recent print. Monthly sentiment fell sharply, with Twitter sentiment down -21.1% m/m and news sentiment down -12.6% m/m.

NKE Attention Economy trends continue to accelerate rapidly in the US (+28% y/y T16W) and globally (+13% y/y) following a long period of negative y/y trends.

Our Gen Z Attention Economy Monitor, which tracks how Gen Z consumers engage digitally with individual brands, improved for NKE in January (+2% y/y) and February (+5% y/y), declined slightly in March (-3%), and was flat in April, but has increased by +14% y/y in May, +30% y/y in June, and +38% y/y in July, signaling greatly improving Gen Z Attention Economy trends.
